August is the time to gather the harvest, a wonderful time for gardeners and allotment owners. At the end of the summer, Uglich hosts its annual fair that brings together farmers from all the surrounding areas. The fair takes place on the town’s central square, which also has another name – the marketplace.

The Uglich Harvest Fair is a celebration of authentic Russian culture: stalls crammed full of delicious home-grown produce, fragrant honey from bee gardens, and fresh milk, sour cream and cottage cheese from the villages. Local women bring along all their homemade goods, and as well as tasting the delicious jams, homemade liqueurs and endless different pickles, you can get your hands on the recipes to learn exactly how all these delicacies are made.

The Fair is accompanied by a costume parade, which takes place along the town’s main street. Mythical creatures, magical characters, heroes of your favorite children’s cartoons – the vivid colors of the carnival are a perfect match for the colorful extravaganza of fruit and vegetables on the market stalls.

On the central square there are folk groups and fantastic entertainers, and many funny competitions are held. Visitors can satisfy their hunger at food stands, ranging from homemade pies and fresh pancakes with honey and sour cream to hot food straight off the barbecue. And you’re sure to find a unique souvenir – Uglich craftsmen bring all their best products along to the Fair.
